When you think of Salzburg, two things come to mind: Mozart and the Sound of Music. However Salzburg is so much more. The Old Town is compact and full of beautiful Baroque buildings dating back to the Middle Ages including the house where Mozart was born. Here two cultural influences from Italy and Germany meet. The surrounding hills and mountains provide a spectacular background to dozens of spires and domes with the grand Hohensalzburg fortress dominating the skyline.
The New Town is dominated by the Mirabell garden and palace. Come in early to this manicured garden to have a morning stroll to start the day and avoid the tourist crowd. The sun streaming through the leafy trees casting playful shadows on the garden benches and pathways while church bells ringing in the distance. The only company you might have is the garden worker who started work early to tend to plants and flowers.
Walk along River Salzach in the afternoon and people are basking in the sunshine on the grassy river banks. If you want an afternoon tea the famous cafe Tomaselli in the Old Town is a 300-year-old institution popular with locals and tourists. Mid-morning to afternoon are the busiest times. Staff members with trays of delicious sweet pastries and cakes will go around from table to table. Viennese classics such as apple strudels, nockerl slices, sachertorte and black forest gateau are served here.
If you don't want to walk you can hop on a horse carriage that will take you around Salzburg. It's also worth climbing up Salzburg's hills. One of these hills, the Kapuzinerberg hill is located in the New Town and from here you can get a beautiful view across the Old Town and the surrounding mountains.
